Skills learned include: observing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting changes in a patient's condition, communicating with patients, their relatives and other medical and health professionals, educating patients, relatives and the general community about health care, administering medications and treatments, personal hygiene and nutrition. The main purpose of this field of study is to develop an understanding of the nursing principles and practices used in caring for the sick, disabled, infirm and those with psychiatric disorders, disease processes and mechanisms and their clinical manifestations and treatment, and the interaction between humans and their physical, biological and social environment. It also involves developing an understanding of professional responsibility in relation to individuals and the community.
